Awesome post! I've always advised everyone that asks me about Etsy to view it as a part of their marketing efforts and not some magic place where merely posting a few listings creates a viable business. Like you said, running a creative business requires a lot of effort beyond taking a few photos and writing a few sentences to describe your work...it takes planning, determination and tenacity as well as the willingness to go beyond comfort zones to achieve those goals.

Ha! I applaud your success at keeping it consistent. I think I lean too much toward the Madonna philosophy of constantly reinventing myself, but now that I'm in the professional world, I think ibwatson will be around to stay for a good long time.

Wow, your early screenames are way more complex and thoughtful than anybody I know.

Wanna hear something lame? I've used the exact same username for everything since I got my first email account at 12. I didn't even know AOL existed until 1999. My dad still uses it as his primary email.

I'm glad you liked it, Elizabeth. It's always important to consider why you're doing something, and hopefully that introspection allows you to center yourself and balance your life.

If we rush into things too quickly, it's easy to bite off more than we can chew or jump into things for the wrong reasons.

All this circles back to my greatest personal mottos (and please pardon my French):

"Pay attention."
"Give a shit."

I try to maintain them as my guiding principles, and they haven't failed me yet! :-)

This is a very thoughtful post and has given me a lot to think about. I've always felt like I should connect more to the craft community here in Austin, but hadn't really stopped to consider my motives more fully.
